Less is more

There is still meat on the bones of this year but as we enter the twilight of November. it's officially strategic planning season. Time to make some "new choices" (as Wade Jackson might say).

November is the time when companies engage the most with their strategic plans according to ClearPoint Strategy's Strategic Planning Report, whilst more initiatives kick off in Jan than any other month of the year.

A couple of quick reminders that may help when working through your planning sessions:

- Choosing what NOT to do is equally as important as choosing what you will do - less is more

- "Plans with fewer than 20 total elements succeed 68% of the time" (ClearPoint). Keep your activities to a manageable list. New items will inevitably find their way onto your planning board before the first quarter is over.

- Include an impartial voice in your planning discussions, or at the very least, ensure that one person actively, deliberately and positively challenges your ideas before you commit to them. There is nothing less productive than creating an echo chamber.

- Each initiative should have clear ownership. With multiple owners, you have no owners.

Peter Allan and I are hosting a series of 90-minute strategic planning workshops in the next few weeks. Let me know if you are interested to get involved. We can help you make choices that will support your success in 2026 and beyond.
